It was created onJanuary 1 ,1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat and largest town isGrajewo , which lies convert|76|km|mi|0 north-west of the regional capitalBiałystok . The county also contains the towns ofSzczuczyn , lying convert|15|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-west of Grajewo, andRajgród , convert|19|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-east of Grajewo.The county covers an area of convert|967.24|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 50,120, out of which the population of Grajewo is 22,651, that of Szczuczyn is 3,564, that of Rajgród is 1,673, and the rural population is 22,232.
