* January 20 - Bushranger Captain Moonlite (real name Andrew George Scott) hanged in Sydney.
* January 31 - The Bulletin magazine is first published
* April 16 - School is made compulsory for children aged 6 to 14 in New South Wales.
* June 28 Ned Kelly captured at Glenrowan, Victoria.
* October 1 - The Melbourne International Exhibition is opened at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton.
* October 10 - Geologist Lamont Young and four others disappear on a boat trip north from Bermagui, New South Wales.
* November 11 - Bushranger Ned Kelly is hanged.
