Lorne, Scotland

Lorne, Scotland

Lorne (Latharna in Gaelic) is a region and historic district in the west of Scotland, now part of the Argyll and Bute council area. The district bordered (what was then a smaller) Argyll to the south, Lochaber to the north and Breadalbane to the east. The district may have taken it's name from Loarn mac Eirc, who held lands in that part of Scotland.

The Lordship of the district was held as a subsidiary title of the earldom and later the Duchy of Argyll from 1470.

The district was later combined with Argyll and parts of Lochaber to make up the traditional county of Argyll (sometimes known as the anglicised Argyllshire) during reorganisation due to Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889, this Act established a uniform system of county councils and town councils in Scotland and restructured many of Scotland’s counties.
