Slug (typesetting)

A slug is a piece of spacing material used in typesetting to space paragraphs. They are usually manufactured in strips of 6pt lead.

In modern typesetting programs such as Adobe InDesign, the slug is also a non-printing area situated off the main page, where information such as the page or document title can be stored [http://desktoppub.about.com/od/indesigntutorials/ss/id_docarea.htm] .
