Second Australian Imperial Force

The 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Divisions were the only Second Australian Imperial Force (2nd AIF) divisions to be fully formed and see active service. Elements of the 1st Armoured Division also saw action after being transferred from the division to other formations such as the 4th Armoured Brigade. While it was planned to form a 10th Division as Australia's contribution to the invasion of Japan, the war ended before the division was established.

Militia

The other units listed above were Militia units (Australian Military Forces - conscripted personnel who, by Commonwealth Of Australia Defence legislation, could only be deployed into active service within Australia and Australian Territories). The 3rd and 5th Divisions saw active service in their entirety, as did elements of some other Militia divisions, although most of these divisions were never fully formed.
