Kevin Cheng (born August 15, 1969), also known as Ka-Wing, is a Hong Kong singer and television actor. He is currently an artiste under the management of TVB. He rose to fame in late 2004 after his first lead role in "Hard Fate" as "Kent". He is best known for his role "Alan" in the 2006 TVB romance drama, "Under the Canopy of Love", which also earned him a Best Lead Actor award at the 2006 TVB Anniversary Awards.

Biography

Early Years

Cheng was born in San Francisco, United States. He moved to Hong Kong at a young age and studied in Pun U Association Wah Yan Primary School, and later in Hong Kong International School and Hoc Signo Vinces, an English-speaking high school in Hong Kong. Before graduation, he moved to Canada for the rest of his high school years. He later went to United States to pursue his college degree in CSULAcite web | url = http://jaynestars.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=8 | title = Looking Closely At Kevin Cheng] where he majored in Civil Engineering. However, due to the passing of his father, he did not finish his degree and decided to move back to Hong Kong to start a singing career and to be with his mother.

1993–2005: Modest Beginnings

When he was 16 and still studying high school in Hong Kong, he participated in TVB New Talent singing contest, but he pulled out mid-way because he was not ready for a singing career yet. When he moved back to Hong Kong again in his early 20's, he signed a contract with the record label PolyGram in 1993 and released his debut album that same year to mixed reviews. Due to problems with his manager, his company changed gears and pushed Cheng towards Taiwan, who then released several Mandarin albums and dramas there, all of which brought in only modest success for Cheng's career.

Cheng was discovered by TVB after his role in "The Legendary Twins", in which Cheng portrayed the villain, Jiang Yulang. He was brought back to Hong Kong and signed a contract with TVB that following year. He started out with portraying small characters until 2004 when he was given a main role in "Hard Fate".

2006–present: Breakthrough Success

Cheng soared to popularity after his lead role in the well-received 2006 TVB romance drama "Under the Canopy of Love", in which he starred alongside "Niki Chow" and "Bosco Wong". His singing career also began to pick up again after the well-known Liu Jiachang composed a single for him, entitled "無可奈何". In the same year, he has also released a Cantonese compilations album and held his very first mini concert.

In 2006, Cheng won his first award from TVB as Best Lead Actor for his role in "Under the Canopy of Love". He was shocked and made an emotional speech saying, "My mom supported me through all the hardship for thirteen years. Tonight I can finally tell her that her son has made the right decision in staying in this industry. I would like to tell every struggling artiste out there that as long as you stay strong, dreams can come true." Cheng is highly praised by TVB executive, Virginia Lok and he is also a favoured actor of TVB producer, Amy Wong.

Cheng's first critical breakthrough role was in the 2007 TVB crime drama "The Ultimate Crime Fighter" where he portrayed the villain "Aaren", earning him great reviews. In the 2008 TVB thriller/suspense drama "Last One Standing", his portrayal of the ex-convict "Sing Hei" has earned him further critical acclaim and the role is currently seen as his best work to date.
