King David Schools, Johannesburg

The King David Schools are a network of Jewish day schools in Johannesburg, South Africa. There are three campuses across Johannesburg: Linksfield, Victory Park, and Sandton.

Linksfield

The first and oldest campus is in Linksfield, in north eastern Johannesburg. This school opened in 1948, the same year Israel became an independent state. The school was opened because of the need for Jewish children to receive a full-time Jewish education. The first headmaster of the high school which was opened in 1955 was Norman Sandler who was headmaster until 1973. He was succeeded by English and Latin teacher Elliot Wolf who was headmaster until his retirement in 2001. The third headmaster of the high school was Arnold Altshuler who was the Matric Geography teacher. He was headmaster from 2002 till the end of 2005. The fourth and current headmaster is Mark Falconer.

Many of the original buildings of the high school from 1948 still exist on the campus. The Central Block or C Block is the remnant of the barns and stables that existed when the area was used as a farm. The Administration Block is in the style of a Cape Dutch house complete with wooden shutters which open horizontally. The Hostel which ran for many years and allowed students from country communities to attend King David was closed at the end of 1996. The hostel is still however called 'the hostel' even though there are no boarding facilities. The hostel has been converted into classrooms with the dining hall being used as an indoor sport venue. A Facebook group has been created for ex-hostelites wishing to keep in touch: [http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2262231016 Sachs House Hostel]

The school currently writes the Independent Examination Board examinations for Matriculation. The school is renowned for its excellence in secondary education and its inclusion of Judiac courses. There are daily morning religious services held and Hebrew and/or Jewish Studies are compulsory subjects until Grade 11 (Form IV)

There are now sandton and victory park schools as well
