Su Lian Tan (born
1964 ) is a renowned composer and flautist.Fact|date=December 2007 Her works, which tend to be regarded asavant-garde ,Fact|date=December 2007 have been commissioned by theTakacz String Quartet ,Meridian Arts Ensemble ,Boston Modern Orchestra Project , and other premier orchestras and ensembles around the world. child prodigy who began a professional career in music at the age of 14. She went on to study at theJuilliard School ,Bennington College andPrinceton University with world-famous composers such asMilton Babbitt ,Bernard Rands andHenry Brant . She toured the world as a guest soloist, displaying her virtuosity on the flute and making forays intoopera (she is a lyricsoprano ) and pop music. She was hired by Middlebury College in 1994 and since then has focused on teaching and composition.Fact|date=December 2007Recent premieres include a symphony premiered by the Vermont Youth Orchestra and a
