The University of Abuja was established on January 1, 1988 (under decree NO. 110 of 1992 as amended) as a dual mode university with the mandate to run both conventional and distance learning programmes and was the first university in Nigeria to assume such dual mandate thus the University is committed to and seeks academic excellence while at the same time ensuring equal educational access to a diverse constituency thus preparing its students for productive roles in the society.The motto of the University is "FOR UNITY AND SCHOLARSHIP" and under the current leadership of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Nuhu Yaqub this translates into providing practical and innovative education for service to humanity, thus in the pursuance of this broad objective, the university programmes aregeared towards relevant training of students and staff for imaginative, innovative and creative performance in the different fields of human endeavour they may be engaged.

The University currently runs regular Degree, Diploma, and Post graduate programmes and due to its strategic location in the Federal Capital Territory has a Centre for Distance Learning School which provides University education opportunities to those whom for one reason or the other cannot acquire such education through the regular university education system, and also those interested in acquiring new knowledge and some specialized skills. The University also runs a Consultancy Services sub degree programme and an Institute of Education to cater for the professional needs of teachers, specialized needs of Government educational bodiesand provide avenues for the establishment of linkages on educational matters with organisations and institutions within and outside Nigeria.

The University of Abuja is temporarily located in Gwagwalada, Abuja, Nigeria with the permanent site covering about 11,824 hectares under construction along the Kaduna -Lokoja - Abuja Road, and has a website at the address http://www.unibuja.edu.ng and also an Edu Global College portal and modern digital centres built and maintained by Socketworks Ltd which caters for its Centre for Distance Learning, Institute of Education and Consultancy students.
