- Barretina
A "barretina" is a traditional Catalan hat that was frequently worn by men. It is a
hat in the form of a bag, made ofwool , usually red, or sometimes purple. In its different variants, people wore it in parts of the Christian cultures of theMediterranean sea such asCatalonia , Valencia,Ibiza ,Provence ,Corsica ,Sicily ,Sardinia , part ofNaples , part of theBalkans and parts ofPortugal . In Catalonia and Ibiza, men wore it until the19th century , especially in rural areas.Today, the "barretina" is no longer commonly worn in everyday life, but is still used in folkloric dances, or as a symbol of Catalan identity.
Salvador Dalí re-popularized the "barretina" in the first half of the 20th century. The Catalan Christmas figure "caganer " also wears a barretina.See also
