Pav Akhtar

Pav Akhtar is a British Labour Party politician, and currently councillor for Stockwell in the London Borough of Lambeth [cite web |url = http://www.lambethlabour.com/lambethlabourpeople/pavakhtar.html |title = Stockwell Councillor- Pav Akhtar |accessdate = 2008-06-08] . A former student of Homerton College, Cambridge, he was the first non-white President of the Cambridge University Students Union.

After "The Guardian" newspaper repeated the fact that Akhtar is gay, some users of the Muslim Public Affairs Committee forum voiced their contempt towards him . Akhtar told PinkNews.co.uk: “both Islamophobia and homophobia played a part in the election campaign.” He claims that some Muslim students were told: “don't vote for Pav, he's gay.” Although a member of the Labour Party, Akhtar was not a member of its student wing and ran for NUS President as an independent candidate.

Pav Akhtar was re-elected in May 2006 as Black Members’ Officer for the Labour Campaign for Lesbian & Gay Rights. He now works for the British trade union UNISON.

Pav is also the chair of Imaan [cite web |url = http://www.imaan.org.uk/ |title = Imaan - Muslim LGBTQ Support |accessdate = 2008-06-08] , the LGBT Muslim organisation. He sits on the Labour Party's national LGBT executive and an advisor to the Mayor of London on issues related to LGBT.
