Carrollton, Maryland

Carrollton, Maryland

Carrollton in Maryland, USA, is a famous name but was never a town. In 1732 an Irish immigrant, Dr. Charles Carroll, purchased a 2,568 acre (10 km²) tract which was rich in iron ore. His son, John Henry, lived in a frame house here and operated the mine. He referred to the area, then west of Baltimore, as Carrollton. Over the next decades several of the Carroll family moved to homes built on this land. These included the cousins Charles Carroll of Carrollton and Charles Carroll, Barrister. The former signed the Declaration of Independence using the name, and making the place famous, even though it was not a town. The area is now known as the Carroll Park neighborhood in Baltimore.

Later, a number of towns in other states were named Carrollton in honor of Charles Carroll or his "town".
