The school's 'enlightened' approach to pupils with medical problems has twice reached the newspapers in 2008.
The first incident related to a pupil suffering from
alopecia , who has been told that he will be taught in isolation and excluded from other pupils if he wears the hat he feels comfortable in. [Daily Mail article 8 September 2008]The second relates to a pupil with
ADHD who was excluded from school for 'naughty' behaviour, including pretending to smoke a cigarette he found on the floor. A Special Educational Needs & Disability Tribunal found against the school in 2007, saying "We find that the responsible body [the school] unlawfully discriminated against [the pupil] ." It went on to say: "The responsible body is to carry out training for all staff in relation to working with pupils with ADHD and ASD, such training to be delivered within six months." The mother of the pupil has returned to the Tribunal in 2008. [Lincolnshire Echo article 17 September 2008]Timeline of the school
