Caripi were a kind of horse-guards among the Turks. Numbering about 1,000, they were not slaves, nor bred up in
seraglio s or seminaries, like the rest. Instead, they were generallyMoors , or renegade Christians, who having followed adventures, and being poor and seeking fortune, arrived at the rank of horse guards to theGrand Signior . Their pay was 12asper s (about one-tenth of apiastre ) per day.The word "caripi" signifies "poor", and "stranger".
