The Museum of American Finance, is an American financial-history museum, located in the Financial District of the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York.

It is the nation's only[citation needed] independent public museum dedicated to celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurship and the democratic free-market tradition which made New York City the financial capital of the world. The museum was chartered as an educational institution. Today, financial education is at the core of the museum’s mission and its public programs and services.

The museum was founded in 1988 as the Museum of American Financial History.[clarification needed] Until December 2006, it was located nearby in the Standard Oil Building at 26 Broadway. On January 11, 2008, the museum opened in a new location at 48 Wall Street, the former headquarters of The Bank of New York.[1]

It is an active national-level advocate on behalf of financial literacy and is committed to helping people look to the lessons of American financial history, while taking charge of their own financial lives.

The museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.
