It is the currently the third-busiest airport inMindanao , after afterFrancisco Bangoy International Airport inDavao City andZamboanga International Airport . It is also the only airport in Misamis Oriental. The airport is classified as a trunkline airport, or a major commercial domestic airport, by the Air Transportation Office, a body of the Department of Transportation and Communications that is responsible for the operations of not only this airport but also of all other airports in the Philippines except the major international airports.The airport takes its name from its location, Barangay Lumbia in Cagayan de Oro.
Lumbia Airport is set to be replaced by the larger
