Sandra Hall Magnus (born 30 October 1964) is an American engineer and a NASA astronaut. She is a veteran of a single space mission. She is also a licensed amateur radio operator, callsign KE5FYE.

Early life and education

Magnus was born and raised in Belleville, Illinois. She earned degrees in physics and electrical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology before earning a doctorate in materials science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996.

Engineering career

During the 1980s, Magnus worked on stealth aircraft design as an engineer for McDonnell Douglas.

NASA career

Magnus was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1996 and flew her first space mission, STS-112, in October 2002 as a mission specialist.

Currently, Magnus is scheduled for a long duration stay on board the International Space Station. Her time on board will last from November 2008 to February 2009. During that time she will serve as Flight Engineer 2 on Expedition 18.
