Anthony Pateras

Anthony Pateras (b.1979) is an Australian musician and composer based in Melbourne. He is a specialist in prepared piano, works extensively with live electronics and writes music for ensembles, orchestras and films.

Biography

His own conducting appearances have included engagements at the [http://www.melbournefestival.com.au/ Melbourne International Arts Festival] (2005/6) and at [http://www.gaudeamus.nl/ Gaudeamus] on 2004.

Pateras has appeared alongside some of the most intrepid improvisers working today, including Paul Lovens, Tony Buck, Jérome Nôetinger, Clayton Thomas, Thomas Lehn, Natasha Anderson, Johannes Bauer and Anthony Burr. He performed with percussion virtuoso [http://www.pedrocarneiro.com/ Pedro Carniero] at London’s [http://www.ica.org.uk/ ICA] in 2007, and has recently commenced ongoing projects with visual artist [http://www.annaschwartzgallery.com/works/biography?artist=39&c=m Marco Fusinato] (Poletopra) and grind drummer [http://www.myspace.com/agentsofabhorrence Max Kohane] (formerly known as Maxximal Patterrorist, now known as PIVIXKI).

He was the recipient of the 2007 Ian Potter Fellowship, and in 2009, concerts of his entire percussion oeuvre will be staged at the Melbourne Recital Centre and Brisbane Powerhouse.

Pateras’ prepared piano work was also featured on the soundtrack to the film Wolf Creek, his own film music having played at [http://www.festival-cannes.fr/en/archives/artist/id/124752.html Cannes] , Sundance, Telluride, Palm Springs and Sao Paulo amongst others; his soundtrack for Eron Sheean’s Bing winning the best music award at the 2003 Dresden Film Festival.

Pateras was the artistic director of the 2008 Melbourne International Biennale of Exploratory Music, described by [http://rt.airstrip.com.au/article/85/9056 RealTime as “a significant achievement in contemporary music programming”] , and has participated in group sound exhibitions at West Space Melbourne, San Francisco MOMA and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Other releases in 2008 include a track with Oren Ambarchi on Southern Lord, his third album with electronic artist Robin Fox on Editions Mego and both studio and live albums from Pateras/Baxter/Brown on [http://emp.pl/records emd.pl records] and [http://cave12.org Cave 12] respectively.

In 2008 he was awarded a PhD from Monash University.
