William Francis Plummer (born
March 21 ,1947 in Oakland, CA) was acatcher for theChicago Cubs ,Cincinnati Reds , and theSeattle Mariners . While never a regular player (he wasJohnny Bench 's backup catcher duringthe Big Red Machine years), he did play solid defense. He was a lifetime .188 hitter (he only batted above .200 three times in his career). After he retired, he stayed with the Mariners as a third base coach, and whenJim Lefebvre was fired after the by|1991 season, he was hired as manager. He finished last in his only season in Seattle, going 64-98. In one particular incident before a game against theChicago White Sox , a lineup card was filled out by his third base coach that did not list adesignated hitter , and Plummer was blamed for it.fact|date=April 2007 The Mariners, however, went on to win the game.Plummer has managed in both independent and minor league baseball having managed the
