Serbia debuted (and won) in 2007 at the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest. Previously it participated as part of Yugoslavia (1961-1991), Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1992) and Serbia and Montenegro (2004-2006).

Serbian debut entry, the ballad "Molitva" by Marija Šerifović, won the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with a score of 268 points. Thanks to this, they were the host of the 2008 edition in Belgrade.

The second Serbian entry, performed in Belgrade was written by past entrant and contest host Željko Joksimović. The song "Oro", an ethnic ballad, performed by Jelena Tomašević came 6th and received 160 points in the overall rankings.

Since it's debut as Serbia, they are the one of two countries to be placed in the top ten since the introduction of the semi-finals. The other country to achieve this goal is Greece.
