Zonnar

Zonnar

Zonnar (also zonar, Arabic زنار) were distinctive clothing that dhimmis — Christians and Jews — in the Levant under the Ottoman Empire were required to wear as part of Islamic law. The clothing was usually a belt or girdle.

A 2006 clothing law under discussion in the Iranian Majlis (Parliament) was characterized by Canadian newspaper the "National Post" as requiring Jews to wear yellow ribbons, Christians red, and Zoroastrians (a minority non-Islamic religion in Iran) blue, but numerous other sources such as Associated Press and Reuters have reported that the law only encouraged the promotion of Iranian and Islamic fashion for Muslims.
