Reviews ="Your Woman" is a 1997 music single released by British
one-man band White Town , also known as Jyoti Mishra. [ [http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/5.06/white_town.html Interview with Jyoti Mishra] at Wired magazine, issue 5.06, June 1997.] It features atrumpet line taken from "My Woman" byAl Bowlly and it reached number one in the British charts in 1997. It also hit number 23 on theBillboard Hot 100 .The song is often known by the title of the EP on which it originally appeared — "Abort, Retry, Fail?". The song later also appeared as the centerpiece of White Town's full-length album "
Women in Technology ".The artist has reported that the lyrics could stem from or be relatable to multiple situations. He says "When I wrote it, I was trying to write a pop song that had more than one perspective. Although it’s written in the first person the character behind that viewpoint isn’t necessarily what the casual listener would expect". [http://www.whitetown.co.uk/faq/] The lyrics could mean, he says, "Being a member of an orthodox Trotskyist / Marxist movement (as I was for three years in the 80s). Being a straight guy in love with a lesbian (ditto). Being a gay guy in love with a straight man (not tried this one yet). Being a straight girl in love with a lying, two-timing, fake-ass Marxist. The hypocrisy that results when love and lust get mixed up with highbrow ideals." [http://www.whitetown.co.uk/faq/]
The
music video was produced inblack-and-white silent film style. Nearly all of the outdoor scenes were filmed inDerby City Centre (UK). There is one scene in the videoclip where the female actor closes the door on the male actor's arm, as she tries to escape from his advances. This is a direct reference to a very similar scene fromSalvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel's 1928 surrealistfilm "Un chien andalou ".The song was covered by
Tyler James in July 2005.ee also
