Recap
The race was scheduled for Sunday,
May 25 , but rain delayed it until Monday. On Monday, the race began, but rain halted it after 15 laps. Instead of rescheduling it for the weekend, track officials decided, due to an upcoming IRL race on that date atTexas Motor Speedway , to finish the race Tuesday. Many fans were not able to return. Late in the race, Scott Goodyear ran second to teammate Arie Luyendyk. The race restarted for a one-lap dash to the finish but the caution lights on the mainstretch stayed yellow. Luyendyk accelerated as instructed but Goodyear saw the yellow and hesitated, ending his chance to challenge after the act allowed Luyendyk to pull away slightly on the last lap to win his second race. The race was the first to be run under a new engine formula requiring normally-aspirated engines. Confusion regarding qualifying procedures resulted in 35 cars on the grid, the most since 1979. Five of them dropped out before the initial green flag: three in an accident, and two others because of mechanical ills.Mari Hulman George delivered the command to start engines for just the second time. Results

*This was the first year of controversy for the IRL's 25/8 rule, where the top 25 drivers in IRL points would be guaranteed spots for the Indianapolis 500. After 2 drivers who were "bumped" by IRL regulars filed a complaint with the USAC (who was still
sanctioning the race), the two drivers bumped from the field were allowed to start, making 35 drivers in the field.*The green flag was flown with the white flag on the last lap after a late caution. Presuming that the race would end under caution, both Goodyear and Luyendyk were caught off guard and were slow to respond to the restart according to television interviews. Yellow lights in turn one remained on as the field came to the area of the track while the track was in a green condition.
