- Eighth Avenue Place (Calgary)
Eighth Avenue Place is a twin office tower project to be built on the former site of Calgary's historic
Penny Lane Mall . Concerns have been raised over the destruction of the 94-year-old Penny Lane Mall, however the City of Calgary approved the project in March 2006 [ [http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/internet/inimr-ri.nsf/en/gr107829e.html Industry Canada] - $US156 Million facelift for Penny Lane Mall ] . Demolition of the old mall was completed in September 2007. Excavation of the parkade below the building commenced in December 2007 and construction of the 49 story east tower, and the parkade, will begin in Summer 2008. The east tower is proceeding 'on spec' and has yet to sign any tentants. The rest of the building will adopt a dark gray layered appearance representing the shiftingtectonic plate s that built the mountains.
