Llanwern is an electoral district (ward) and smaller community parish in the urban-rural fringe of the City of Newport, South Wales. The Llanwern ward contains the parishes of Bishton, Goldcliff, Whitson and Redwick, as well as the parish of Llanwern (population 333 [ [http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadTableView.do?a=3&b=801798&c=llanwern&d=16&e=15&g=421553&i=1001x1003x1004&o=1&m=0&enc=1&dsFamilyId=779 Office for National Statistics Parish Headcounts: Llanwern] ] ). The parish itself contains Llanwern village and the western half of what was the site of the steelworks.

The ward is bounded the M4 and Langstone ward to the north, Ringland, Liswerry and the River Usk to the west, the River Severn to the south and the city boundary to the east.

Llanwern House was the home of Lord Rhondda of Llanwern, (David Alfred Thomas), who was Food Controller during the First World War. It was demolished in the 1950s, although the site, on a hill overlooking the parish church [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/148334] , is still visible and the parkland intact. D. A. Thomas is buried in the graveyard of the tiny church.

The site of the former Llanwern Steelworks (formerly the Spencer Works), which was the first oxygen-blown integrated steelworks in Britain when it opened in 1962 is in the parish. [The Welsh Academy Encyclopedia of Wales. Cardiff: University of Wales Press 2008] Steel-making making at the site ceased in 2001 with the loss of 1300 jobs, and was finally demolished in 2004 [South Wales Argus, September 2004] . The site is set to be transformed into a residential development.

The area has a football team, Llanwern F.C..
