Yalkara

Yalkara is a fictional character in Ian Irvine's "The View from the Mirror" quartet. She is the third of the three Charon to come to Santhenar.

Characteristics

Yalkara was very tall for a woman and in her prime had long flowing black hair, though it was silvering when she fled Santhenar and completely white at the end of The Way Between the Worlds. Her eyes were a deep indigo and she had terribly scarred hands. Yalakra had skin the color of amber. She was very beautiful and an exceptionally powerful mancer.

History gave Yalkara many derogatory names, as it tends to do to great women, more so than great men. Known as the Mistress of Deceits and the Demon Queen, much about Yalkara remained a mystery, she being the most enigmatic of the three Charon of Santhenar. Few ever knew of her love with Gyllias, let alone that she bore his daughter moments before fleeing Santhenare through a flaw in the Forbidding.

Yalkara's History

Mirror of Aachan

After being smuggled to Santhenar by Tensor, the Mirror of Aachan became warped, as things that travel between the worlds tended too. It lay forgotten within Tar Gaarn, having become too treacherous for the Aachim to make use of. However when Rulke sacked the great city, Yalkara ventured secretly within and stole the Mirror.

A great race was run to capture Yalkara, however she was able to disappear. Using her Art Yalkara bent the Mirror to her will. Having originally created the Forbidding, Yalkara intended to buy time to learn the the use of the Mirror so as to find within it the secret to permanately seal the worlds off from each other. Through the Mirror, Yalkara learnt many secrets, which served her well in her battles with her nemesis Faelamor.

In their final battle, Faelamor was able to force certain information about the Mirror from Yalkara. Both were gravely wounded, Yalkara to such a standard that unless she were to return to Aachan for the aid of her people, she would die. Yalkara locked the Mirror, by drawing symbols around the edges, leaving a message to her daughter Aeolior, who she gave birth to alone within her fortress of Havissard after her battle with Faelamor, within it. The message explained to Aeolior, her plans on how to save the Three Worlds.

Opening a gate, through a flaw in the Forbidding, Yalkara said her goodbyes to her beloved Gyllias, before leaving Santhenar forever.
