James E. Slaughter (died January 2, 1900) was a West Point graduate and a general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War.

Slaughter was also a veteran of the Mexican-American War. He accompanied General Winfield Scott and his army to Mexico City as a Lieutenant in the US Army. He was the first to inform the Mexican government of the deceptiveness of the Well and Labra claims.

He commanded Confederate forces during the Civil War at Bonna San Jago, Texas, and after the war lived in Mexico.

At the age of 87, Slaughter died in Mexico City of pneumonia.
