In the early evening of Thursday 8 August 1996, a passenger train travelling from London Euston on the West Coast Main Line passed a signal at danger and collided with an empty coaching stock train approximately 700m south of Watford Junction. One person was killed and 69 were injured, including four members of the trains crew.

The train was at the time being operated by North London Railways (NLR) which has since changed its name to Silverlink.
