All Assam Students Union

All Assam Students Union or AASU is a students' organization in Assam, India. It is politically very active and is best known for leading the six-year Assam Movement against alleged illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, which culminated in the infamous Nellie massacre of more than 2000 muslims in 1983, whose pictures of gory bloodshed shocked India and the world. [http://nagarealm.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=3134&theme=Printer] Perhaps realizing that the movement was getting out of hand, the AASU agreed to a pact with the Rajiv Gandhi government, leading to the termination of its agitation, and the leadership formed a political party Asom Gana Parishad, which came to power in the state in the same year. AASU has a long history of orchestrating violent movements against non-Assamesse speaking people living in India. On many past occasions, AASU has repeatedly threatened non-Assamesse people to leave Assam bag and baggage. As on today(Aug-2008) AASU has again raised the Illegal Bangladeshi rhetoric alleging that all Bangla- (a language of West Bengal in India) speaking muslims living in Assam are from Bangladesh and started a fresh threatening movement to get rid of the poor muslims.
