- Stjepan Gradić
Stjepan Gradić (also "Stefano Gradi";
March 6 ,1613 -May 2 ,1683 ) was a Ragusanphilosopher andscientist .Gradi was born in Ragusa (
Dubrovnik ), Stefano`s fathers were Michele de Gradi and Maria Benessa, where he was first schooled. He moved toRome for order of your uncle General-bicar of Ragusa Pietro Benessa (*1580 +1642, studied philosophy and theology for seven years to Rome, as representative of the Republic of Ragusa to the Vatican ) to the PopeUrban VIII , and stayed there to hold various offices for theRepublic of Ragusa (its diplomatic representative by theHoly See . Since 1682 he was the head of theVatican Library .Gradi was a
polymath . He cooperated with the historianJoannes Lucius , translated classical authors, wrote a biography of the Ragusan writerJunije Palmotić and a poem about theearthquake in Ragusa. In the literary and scientific circle ofpope Alexander VII and QueenChristina of Sweden Gradi discussed scientific and philosophical issues. Along withphilosophy , he engaged inmathematics ,physics ,astronomy ,literature anddiplomacy .His philosophical works are written in the spirit of Aristotelianism and
scholasticism . Gradi was a member of "Accademia Reale " and of the "Dei Ricoverati " academy inPadua , having correspondence with many notable Europeans. He described the disastrous earthquake in Ragusa in 1667 in Latin verses and organized help from all overEurope for the devastated city. He died in Rome.External links
