Tapatío hot sauce

Tapatío hot sauce

Tapatío is a brand of hot sauce produced in Vernon, California, that can be found at many grocery stores in the United States. It comes in four sizes: 5, 10, and 32 fl oz., and 1 gallon (148, 296, 946 ml and 3.785 liters), as well as in 7 gram packets.

The hot sauce is named "Tapatío", the name given to people from Guadalajara, Jalisco, because the company's founders come from Guadalajara. Many Mexican restaurants feature a bottle of Tapatío on the table. It is exported to Mexico, Canada, Central America and a few countries in Europe.

History

The Tapatío Hot Sauce company was started in 1971 by Jose-Luis Saavedra Sr. in Maywood, California. The company is situated in a 7,000 square foot (650 m²) warehouse. In 1985, the company moved to a new convert|7800|sqft|m2|sing=on location in Vernon, California, just convert|5|mi|km away from Downtown Los Angeles. The building was much bigger than the first location, but it only had a single loading dock and limited storage space, which created a new series of problems for the company. Consequently, it was time to look for a larger place that would provide enough space to meet the company's current requirements and ever-growing needs.

After a long search, a site was found where a developer could build to suit the spacious new convert|30000|sqft|m2|sing=on facility that Tapatío presently occupies. It is a brand new state-of-the-art facility with several loading docks and a fully automated production line; the company that was founded in 1971 has evolved into a modern plant. In addition, Tapatío now has added help from Mr. Saavedra's two daughters; Dolores uses her law degree to handle all of the company's legal matters while Jacquie runs the business office.

Ingredients

Water, red peppers, salt, spices, garlic, acetic acid, xanthan gum and sodium benzoate as a preservative.

Unlike most similar products, it lists acetic acid as an ingredient instead of vinegar.

Miscellanea

*Some aficionados of Tapatío will leave a bottle unopened in the sun for up to three weeks, saying that it enhances the natural flavors.
*Slogan - ES UNA SALSA ... MUY SALSA! (roughly translated as: "It's sauce that's... very saucy!")
