The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit II

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit II

Sloan Wilson intended the sequel to the original novel, "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit", to explain what happened to those young stars of his novel as they approached middle age. However it was not a commercial success. Unlike the original novel, "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit II" is written in first person - Tom Rath narrates the story of his life. The tone of the novel and the behavior of the characters are inconsistent with its prequel, also key characters in the previous novel did not cross over to the new book - like the extremely honest Judge Bernstein and the family of Tom's Boss Ralph Hopkins. This novel seems more 'Tom centric' while the original had Tom as main character in a novel with many interesting sub plots that in the end contribute to his understanding of life. Most fans of the original felt that it did not live up to the expectations set by the original.
