Scars of Life or SOL were a five-piece alternative metal band from Pompano Beach, Florida. They began in 2000 but renamed after the lead singer left and became Burning Red.

History

Mute

In late 2000, the band Confined (also a metal group from Florida) broke up and four of the five members decided to form Scars Of Life. After the recording of SOL's debut Mute bassist Al Torres would decide to leave the band to found death metal act EverSincevE. He would continue on as bassist until a suitable replacement could be found. A few months later, close friend of the band, Mike Kennedy would join the ranks filling the vacant bass slot. Now that the band had a stable line up they began playing at small venues across Florida gradually building up a reputation. This led to them releasing their first CD, Mute.

On November 27th, 2001, Scars of Life's debut CD, "Mute", was independently released to much critical acclaim. The initial response was more than encouraging, with several great reviews being given by local magazines, as well as an impressive amount of airplay on local radio stations. This was a special honor for Scars of Life, since the CD of the month was picked by the fans. Scars of Life was also tapped for the Augusta, GA stop of the Locobazooka tour which included sharing the stage with national acts such as, Sevendust, Earshot and Mushroomhead.

New Material and UFC

In the summer of 2002 SOL would enter Studio 13 to lay down four new tracks with producer Jeremy Staska (Poison the Well, Malevolent Creation). The end result, their 2002 Demo. Three of the four songs featured on the demo would be licensed to the UFC for use in pay-per-views, video games and other venues. Fighter Tank Abbott would also use the track, "Water In My Hands" as his entrance. One other track, previously unreleased on any other album entitled, "Dying Here" would also be licensed and used on a UFC compilation album, entitled , which would feature such established acts as Slayer, Fear Factory and Shadows Fall. Another Tomorrow

In the summer of 2003, SOL found themselves back inside Studio 13 again, with their producer, Jeremy Staska. The end result would be a five song EP entitled, Another Tomorrow. It was announced that Kyle would be leaving the band in November due to personal issues. A week later Kyle would rejoin SOL.

In late 2003, SOL would begin recording their live sets. It was to be released as a CD/DVD package, but the project itself would be dropped in the middle of production to begin the recording of their major label debut. A month later, Jay Capps would be named as his replacement on bass. August 2004, SOL would announce their official signing to label, MusiCom Media. Also announced were plans for their debut CD, What We Reflect. In October, MusiCom Media held two festivals in Florida. SOL would share the stage with such established acts as 40 Below Summer, Damageplan, Drowning Pool and Static X.

Shortly after the festivals took place, MusiCom Media would fold, leaving Scars of Life in limbo. Because the internet music industry was beginning to blossom and because guitarist Joe Raio and drummer Jason Rodman had headed up the internet website, Audiostreet.net, [cite web|title=Audiostreet.net Information|author= |publisher= Audiostreet.net|date= |url=http://www.audiostreet.net/about.aspx|accessdate=2007-07-24] the band would ink a deal through one of their subsidiaries AudioStreet Records to release their debut album. What We Reflect

Originally released on May 1st, 2005, [cite web|title=This Time Has Come!|author= |publisher= Audiostreet.net|date= |url=http://www.audiostreet.net/artist.aspx?artistid=1&mode=news&recordid=972|accessdate=2007-07-24] What We Reflect featured mainly past songs taken from their EPs and demo CDs. These include the songs "Bullet with your Name" taken from their debut EP Mute and "Lemon" taken from Another Tomorrow. It was announced on May 15th, 2005 that the album would receive full distribution through new label, Rock Ridge Music. With his departure, SOL would gain a veteran bass player in Chris Mullen (Primer 55, Sev). Finally, in August What We Reflect was released nationwide. A video for the single "Alone Inside" would be shot in Orlando. Burning Red

The remaining four members of Scars of Life would continue on. After a short, intensive search for a new singer, the band teamed up with former Driver vocalist Frankie "Footer" Kalin, and renamed themselves Burning Red. After a short six month stint under the Burning Red flag, including a gig with Deadstar Assembly, the group would disband as well. Drummer Jason Rodman would cite illegal piracy and the internet as a whole for the breakup on the bands official website. Currently Jason Rodman, Joe Raio and Anthony Parrinello still play music together. Kyle Shapiro got married and moved to Texas. Chris Mullen also got married and moved to Orlando, and Frankie Kalin left the band after receiving a bad response from Rock Ridge about the new style of music.
