Lola Anglada

Lola Anglada i Sarriera (Barcelona, 1893- Tiana (Maresme), 1985) was a catalan writer and illustrator.

Biography

She was born in 1893 in Barcelona, in a family with strong roots in the population of Tiana. She studied in La Llotja de Barcelona with Joan Llaverias and Antoni Utrillo who achieved that Anglada carried out her first exposure in the Sala Parés and that the weekly magazine ¡ Cu-Cut! published a drawing of her.

At the end of WWI she traveled to Paris thanks to a scholarship of the French Government, collaborating with several publishing companies of the French capital, where she correlated with Francesc Macià or Josep Clarà. Compromised with the democratic values and the catalanist cause, she organized a request of amnesty for the accused of participating in the Plot of Garraf against the king Alfons XIII of Spain.

Artitisc works

Versatile, with a technique of excellent drawing, a great sensitivity and a strong nationalistic feeling, Lola Anglada is considerate the last of the classical illustrators of the Catalan school of principles of century XX and one of the most important writers of the stage of the pre-war.

She collaborated in several child magazines, as "En Jordi", "En Patufet", "La Nuri" (set up by her) or "La Mainada". The character that she has made better known, "El més petit de tots" (in english "The smallest of all of them"), is a symbol of catalan national identity of the period.

In 1975 she was rewarded with the Medal to the Cultural Merit of the Diputació de Barcelona, in 1980 with the Medal of the Promotion of the Decorative Arts and in 1981 with the "Creu de Sant Jordi", granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya. She yielded her collection of dolls to the Diputació de Barcelona, which installed in the Romantic Museum of Sitges.

Recognitions

Appointed adoptive daughter of Tiana, this population has also put her name in the private school of primary of the village. Among the 1984 and 2003 I granted itself|himself|herself the Prize Lola Anglada of brief stories for boys and girls, summoned by the Terrassa Box and the Town Council of Terrassa.
