Zama ( _ja. 座間市; -shi) is a city located in Kanagawa, Japan.

As of 2008, the ward has an estimated population of 127,704 and the density of 7,260 persons per km². The total area is 17.58 km².

City status was gained on November 1, 1971.

The city is also home to the United States' Camp Zama Army base.

Geography

Located in central Kanagawa prefecture, the city is mostly flat, although some parts are hilly. The city is 40km distant from Tokyo and 20km from Yokohama. Rivers such as the Sagami River, Mekushiri River, and the Hato River flow through Zama. The city is well known for its drinking water, which is cold in the summer and warm in the winter. It is located quite close to Tokyo, making it a suburban location.
