Vincent Cronin (born
May 24 ,1924 inTredegar ,Wales ) is a British historical, cultural, and biographical writer whose works have been widely translated into European languages. He is known for his biographies ofLouis XIV ,Louis XVI andMarie Antoinette ,Catherine the Great , andNapoleon , as well as for his books on theRenaissance .Cronin was educated at
Ampleforth College ,Harvard University , and Trinity College, Oxford, from which he graduated with honours in 1947. During theSecond World War , he served as a lieutenant in theBritish Army . In 1949, he married Chantal de Rolland, and they have five children. The Cronins are long-time residents ofLondon ,Marbella , and Dragey, inAvranches ,Basse-Normandie , where they live at theManoir de Brion .In addition to being a recipient of a W.H. Heinemann Award (1955) and a
Rockefeller Foundation Award (1958), Cronin is a Fellow of theRoyal Society of Literature . His father is the Scottish novelist,A. J. Cronin .Works
