Soundgenerator.com

] Based in London, Sound Generator is an Internet based music publication – focusing on a broad range of musical genres. Currently, the website attracts more than 650,00 readers a month, predominantly from the UK and North America.

Differing from its peers by placing fringe genres – such as world music and classical music – on equal footing with pop and rock, the site delivers daily news, features and interviews, with regular music video postings and album streams.

Editorially, Sound Generator aims for a broad-ranging audience of serious music fans, while adopting an inclusive, fun attitude in its writing style. It often includes artist-perspective pieces in its copy, and also hosts a large equipment reviews section – which includes contributions from many notable producers and composers working in the music industry.

The site underwent an extensive redevelopment through early 2006, and relaunched in its present form on May 10th. Continuing it’s artist-perspective theme, a new blog section is currently featuring regular contributions from a number of notable recording artists – among them Edinburgh indie experimental rockers Hookers Green No. 1 and Champaign, Illinois Americana act The Beauty Shop.

History

Sound Generator was conceived by composer Andrew T. Mackay and musician Christopher D. Elkins in 1999 following a lengthy successful working partnership at Gormac Studios in West London.

Elkins currently publishes the site from their central London address in Fitzrovia, W1, and continues to involve himself in editorial, while Mackay occupies a behind-the-scenes role, while continuing his composition work. Both continue to follow successful careers as musicians, with Mackay releasing his Six Degrees Records’ debut as part of the Bombay Dub Orchestra in March 2006.

Education links

As announced in 2005, Sound Generator is the official online partner of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and often runs promotions for concert tickets and other PR exercises. The Royal Phil are also contributing to a behind-the-scenes blog, running throughout 2006.

Official message boards for music conservatoires including the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music are all hosted within Sound Generator’s education umbrella, while technology college SAE Institute (School of Audio Engineering) also has a strong presence.
