KLC Ann Arbor

KLC Ann Arbor (Koby Language Center) is a private English language school located in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan. Yoshihisa Kobayashi, founder and president of Koby International Academy, Novi, Michigan, founded the school in 2006 with the primary mission of teaching students with limited English proficiency the skills they need to succeed in academics, business, and life.

Academic Profile

KLC Ann Arbor offers various language programs including the Comprehensive English Program (CEP), Intensive English Program (IEP), Test Preparation Programs for TOEFL (TPPI), TOEIC (TPPII), and SAT (TPPIII), Academic English Program (AEP), Get Ready Program (GRP), Business English Program (BEP), English in Action (EIA), Personalized English Program (PEP), and Japanese Conversation Program (JCP). A summer English program is also offered in June, July, and August. Programs are generally four-week terms, except for the two-week long summer program.

Students include international students who are enrolled or entering grades K-12 in American schools, high school and post-graduate students who are preparing to take the TOEFL iBT (internet Based Test), and business professionals who need English skills for their profession and to prepare for the TOEIC test. The school also designs programs for businesses and individuals who have specific English needs and scheduling requirements.

The academic calendar runs month-to-month all year long. Students in the intensive English programs may spend up to eight months to go from Introductory to Advanced English proficiency. All programs run continuously, and students decide in how many terms they want to continue enrolling.

Campus & Facilities

The school sits above what is known as 222 State Plaza, which in 1900 used to be the office and residence of Victor C. Vaughn, M.D., dean of the University of Michigan Medical School. Physicians, shoemakers, clothing stores, dry cleaners, and even a billiard parlor have occupied the building. Fire destroyed the building in 1954, but it was rebuilt a year later. In 1983, the building was renovated and the third floor added, which is where KLC Ann Arbor was founded in March 2006.

There are six classrooms, a newly constructed CALL lab, three offices, and a reception area. The CALL lab seats 17 students and is equipped with modern hardware and a library of language learning software. The lab is also used as a test center for administering the TOEFL iBT.
