Northumberland ,England . Its main settlements areAshington ,Bedlington andNewbiggin-by-the-Sea .The district is mostly urban, on the
North Sea coast north of theTyneside conurbation. It bordersBlyth Valley district to the south, the border being theRiver Blyth . It was formed onApril 1 ,1974 , under theLocal Government Act 1972 , by the merger of theurban district s of Ashington,Bedlingtonshire and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. It is named after theRiver Wansbeck .The district will be abolished as part of the
