Jan Cock Blomhoff

Jan Cock Blomhoff

Jan Cock Blomhoff (Amsterdam, August 5, 1779 - Amersfoort, August 15, 1853) was director ("opperhoofd") of Dejima, the Dutch trading colony in the harbour of Nagasaki, Japan, 1817 - 1824, succeeding Hendrik Doeff.

When he arrived in Decima (modern spelling Dejima) he was accompanied by his wife Titia, his little son Johannes, and Petronella Munts, a Dutch nurse-maid. The ladies and the little Johannes were not allowed to stay in Japan, but in the short time they stayed there they were often painted by Japanese artists, who had never seen European ladies, and the paintings were widely circulated throughout Japan.
