Sun Yuanliang (zh-tp|t=孫元良|p=Sūn Yúanlíang) (1904 –
May 25 ,2007 ) was ageneral of theNational Revolutionary Army of theRepublic of China . Sun was the last surviving member of the first graduating class of theWhampoa Military Academy , as well as the last surviving army-level commander of theSecond Sino-Japanese War . His career spanned theJanuary 28 Incident (1932 Shanghai war),Second Sino-Japanese War , and theChinese Civil War . When full-scale war broke out between China and Japan in 1937, Sun led his 88th Division in the
Battle of Shanghai . He personally gave the order to regimental commanderXie Jinyuan to hold onto theSihang Warehouse at the conclusion of the three-month battle.In the Chinese Civil War, he lost a crucial battle against the
People's Liberation Army inJiangsu Province with 500,000 Nationalist troops lost. Sun retired shortly after followingChiang Kai-Shek toTaiwan .He died at the age of 103 on May 25, 2007 in Taiwan.
