American National Biography

The "American National Biography" is a 24 volume set containing approximately 17,400 entries [cite web |url=http://www.anb.org/aboutanb.html |title=About the ANB

] and 20 million words. [cite web |url=http://www.acls.org/9798ar/pubs.pdf |title=American National Biography |date=1997|accessdate=2007-05-05] It was published in 1999 (a Supplement 1 has appeared in 2002) as, according to its preface in Volume 1, the successor to the "Dictionary of American Biography" which was first published between 1926 and 1937. It is commonly available in the reference sections of United States libraries.

The general editors of "American National Biography" were John A. Garraty and Mark C. Carnes. It was published by Oxford University Press.

In 1999, the American Library Association awarded the "American National Biography" its prestigious Dartmouth Medal as a reference work of outstanding quality and significance.
