Todd Trainer

Todd Trainer is the drummer for the band Shellac. He also makes and releases his own music under the name Brick Layer Cake, writing, playing, and recording everything himself. He previously played drums for the bands Breaking Circus and Rifle Sport, and he played drums with Scout Niblett in 2005. Trainer also manages a warehousing and shipping company. He owns an Italian greyhound named Uffizi and maintains close ties to his parents and sister Terri.

In 2006, Trainer sported one or more shiny, see-through blouses at Shellac's live performances, as well as a pronounced, spiky mullet, allowing criticism from bandmate Steve Albini that Trainer was, in fact, "double-bloused."

Todd Trainer resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Brick Layer Cake

Brick Layer Cake is the musical project of Todd Trainer. For Brick Layer Cake, Trainer plays every instrument and sings in a deep, speech-like monotone. The music of Brick Layer Cake is characteristically very slow in tempo, to the point of being called "drone-like." Concerning Brick Layer Cake, Steve Albini once said, “Think of Nick Drake on downers fronting Black Sabbath, if Black Sabbath played only the good parts of their songs."
