Ivan Cuthbert Stedman (13 April 1895 – 7 January 1979) was an
Australia n freestyle andbreaststroke swimmer of the 1920s, who won a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the1920 Summer Olympics inAntwerp . He was born inOakleigh , a suburb inMelbourne, Victoria .After being injured in the
Battle of the Somme during theFirst World War , Stedman was selected to carry the flag for Australasia at the Opening Ceremony of the1920 Summer Olympics (Australian andNew Zealand sent a combined team). In the 100m freestyle, Stedman was eliminated in the semifinals, but made the final of the 200m breaststroke, where he came last of the five finalists. In an all-Australian team, Stedman combined withHenry Hay ,William Herald andFrank Beaurepaire to claim silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay. The American team, lead byDuke Kahanamoku won by an extremely large margin of 21s. Stedman also competed at the1924 Summer Olympics inParis , with less success, where he was eliminated in the semifinal of the 100m freestyle and the heats of 200m breaststroke.From about 1927 to 1931 Stedman owned and managed a factory which processed dairy products at
Lang Lang, Victoria . He died on 7 January 1979 atPrahran, Victoria and was cremated.External links
