USS "Omaha" (SSN-692), a "Los Angeles"-class
submarine , was the third ship of theUnited States Navy to be named forOmaha, Nebraska . The contract to build her was awarded to theElectric Boat Division ofGeneral Dynamics Corporation inGroton, Connecticut on31 January 1971 and her keel was laid down on27 January 1973 . She was launched on21 February 1976 sponsored by Mrs.Roman L. Hruska , and commissioned on11 March 1978 , with Commander Ted A. Hamilton in command."Omaha" was placed in commission in reserve on
7 February 1995 , decommissioned and stricken from theNaval Vessel Register on5 October 1995 and laid up atBremerton inWashington . She is scheduled to enter theNuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program on1 October 2007 .External links
