July 10 1955 ) is currently the Democraticmajority leader of theCalifornia State Senate and the first woman to ever hold this leadership position.Romero grew up in Barstow, and earned her
associate's degree fromBarstow Community College . She went on to a B.A. and an M.A. fromCalifornia State University, Long Beach and aPh.D. inpsychology from theUniversity of California, Riverside . She has taught as aprofessor at state universities and served as a trustee and vice president of the board of trustees ofLos Angeles Community College District .She was elected to the
California State Assembly in 1998 and to the Senate in 2001.Romero represents the 24th district, which includes East Los Angeles, portions of the city of Los Angeles, as well as a major part of theSan Gabriel Valley , including the cities ofAzusa ,Baldwin Park ,Covina , Duarte,El Monte ,City of Industry ,Irwindale ,La Puente ,Monterey Park ,Rosemead , andWest Covina .Senator Romero is California's leading legislative expert on reform of its prison system. She has authored numerous pieces of legislation dealing with sentencing and parole reform, including a comprehensive reorganization of the correctional system. Additionally, she is a recognized educational leader and has authored numerous bills addressing educational reform and innovation. She has been a leading voice in seeking greater funding for trauma care and emergency services.
In April,
2006 , Romero co-authored, with State SenatorGil Cedillo , a resolution to recognize America's immigrant roots and history. As a public university professor in California, she is a member of the California Faculty Association.External links
