World Snooker Championship took place at theCrucible Theatre ,Sheffield between15 April and1 May 2000 . It was won by Mark Williams, who beat fellow Welsh playerMatthew Stevens in the final by 18 frames to 16.Notable Moments
Notable moments from the championship include:
* Mark Williams became only the third Welsh snooker player to win the world title after
Ray Reardon andTerry Griffiths and the first since 1979. Trailing 13-7 against fellow countryman Matthew Stevens in the final, Williams recorded a famous comeback to pip Stevens 18-14 and win the title.*
Joe Swail returned to the Top 16 in thesnooker world rankings after reaching the semi-final againstMatthew Stevens . He got a special award after dropping out of the 16, then out of the Top 32 and climbing back the 16 again.* Swail's place in the Top 16 ended
Steve Davis ' long run in the elite - he had been in since 1980 including hold the World No 1 spot from 1983 to 1990. Davis lost 11-13 toJohn Higgins in the second round. He later returned in 2003 which he still remains as of the 2007/2008 list.* Referee
John Newton refereed his first and only World final and he retired from refereeing after the match.* The two pre-tournament favourites,
