World Snooker Championship 2000

The 2000 Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between 15 April and 1 May 2000. It was won by Mark Williams, who beat fellow Welsh player Matthew Stevens in the final by 18 frames to 16.

Notable Moments

Notable moments from the championship include:

* Mark Williams became only the third Welsh snooker player to win the world title after Ray Reardon and Terry Griffiths and the first since 1979. Trailing 13-7 against fellow countryman Matthew Stevens in the final, Williams recorded a famous comeback to pip Stevens 18-14 and win the title.

* Joe Swail returned to the Top 16 in the snooker world rankings after reaching the semi-final against Matthew Stevens. He got a special award after dropping out of the 16, then out of the Top 32 and climbing back the 16 again.

* Swail's place in the Top 16 ended Steve Davis' long run in the elite - he had been in since 1980 including hold the World No 1 spot from 1983 to 1990. Davis lost 11-13 to John Higgins in the second round. He later returned in 2003 which he still remains as of the 2007/2008 list.

* Referee John Newton refereed his first and only World final and he retired from refereeing after the match.

* The two pre-tournament favourites, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan, were both eliminated in the first round - Hendry by crucible debutant Stuart Bingham (10-7) and O'Sullivan by David Gray (10-9).
