In this Vietnamese name, the family name is Nguyễn, but is often simplified to Nguyen in English-language text. According to Vietnamese custom, this person should properly be referred to by the given name Đạo.
Nguyễn-Thiên Đạo (b. Hanoi, Tonkin, French Indochina, 1940) is a French composer of Vietnamese descent who works in contemporary classical music. He came to France in 1953, where he studied composition with Olivier Messiaen. He lives in Paris, France.
In 2000 his opera Sóng hồn premiered at the Hanoi Opera House in Vietnam. In 2002 and 2003, his Sóng nhất nguyên (Monastic Wave) and Sóng nhạc Trương Chi (The Wave of Music) were premiered at the Hanoi Opera House.
