Rough Ride

Rough Ride

Rough Ride is a William Hill Sports Book of the Year award winning book, written by Irish journalist Paul Kimmage in 1990.

It is an autobiography that charts the author's up bringing in Dublin and obsession with cycling, which started with his father being a top level Irish Amateur, to the author becoming Irish national Junior, before riding for an amateur squad in Paris and becoming a professional with French team RMO in 1986 and riding the Tour de France in 1986, 1987 and 1989. It deals with the author's disappointing experiences as a professional cyclist and in particular what he claims was the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs in the sport. His anti-drug stance led to his ostracisation from the ranks of his peers, as he was condemned for having "spat in the soup".
