Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts

"Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts" is a book created entirely by American foresters. A long sought after 47 page anthology of the who's who of American folk monsters including the hodag, squonk, the bildad, and whirling whimpus. It was written by William Thomas Cox (1878-1961, Minnesota’s first state forester), illustrated by Coert Du Bois (also of the Forest Service, wrote an autobiography entitled "Trail Blazers"), with Latin classifications by George B Sudworth (dendrologist of the Forest Service, author of "Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope".) Originally published in 1910 (possibly 1911) by Press of Judd & Detweiler, Inc., "Fearsome Creatures" was later republished in 1984 by Bishop Publishing Co. in a condensed version, that currently sells on Barnes & Noble for about $156. Many had said that no copy of the initial printing was known to exist today, but time would prove differently.

Rediscovery

After an exhaustive, years-long search, in 2005 an original 1910 copy of "Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods" autographed by William T. Cox himself was found at Alibis Books. The book then was made into a hypertext edition (by Apalon Co., Ltd. a small independent entertainment venture) which premiered, Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006 as "William T. Cox’s Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods (95th Anniversary Hypertext Edition.")
