"Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts" is a book created entirely by American
forester s. A long sought after 47 page anthology of the who's who of American folk monsters including thehodag ,squonk , the bildad, and whirlingwhimpus . It was written by William Thomas Cox (1878-1961,Minnesota ’s first state forester), illustrated by Coert Du Bois (also of the Forest Service, wrote an autobiography entitled "Trail Blazers"), withLatin classifications by George B Sudworth (dendrologist of the Forest Service, author of "Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope".) Originally published in 1910 (possibly 1911) by Press of Judd & Detweiler, Inc., "Fearsome Creatures" was later republished in 1984 byBishop Publishing Co. in a condensed version, that currently sells onBarnes & Noble for about $156. Many had said that no copy of the initial printing was known to exist today, but time would prove differently.Rediscovery
After an exhaustive, years-long search, in 2005 an original 1910 copy of "Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods" autographed by William T. Cox himself was found at
Alibis Books . The book then was made into ahypertext edition (by Apalon Co., Ltd. a small independent entertainment venture) which premiered, Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006 as "William T. Cox’s Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods (95th Anniversary Hypertext Edition.")ee also
